On Matt and Christopher Wests frustration with each other.
I understand their frustration. And I think Christopher is obviously correct in what he’s saying about what the enemy wants and fracturing of the body and all that. What I think he’s wrong about, and what I think Matt picked up on, is that the group west is trying to talk to doesn’t exist.
I believe him that many people believe a heresy about the body. BUT what he’s missing is that most of them don’t care.
There are two groups of people, and Christopher is trying to talk to a third that doesn’t exist.
On the one hand you have people like Matt and this audience. People who are sifting through the wreckage of a post Christian society, trying to salvage any tradition we can, trying to figure out how to operate with no roadmap. We understand the heresy of the body, the post Vatican II abuses, poor catechesis, etc. We need no convincing and are all on board, that’s 100% why we listen to shows like pints. We want advice in the particulars.
On the other hand you have the people who simply don’t care. Your Sunday and Easter Catholics, the boomers running parish offices that don’t care about what the church teaches so long as they get the power to run things around the church, and non churchgoing people. These are most likely the people Christopher runs into who believe heretical things. But “believe” might be to strong of a word, these people don’t hold strong convictions about anything. They’re not seeking out better understanding, they are only Catholic because it’s all they know. They’ll vote for democrats even though they support abortion. This type of person isnt a bad person necessarily, they just don’t care what the church actually teaches. So Christopher CAN preach up and down till he’s blue in the face and these people won’t care because they don’t care about the truth. They care about what’s convenient.
So in summary, Christopher is talking to a hypothetical group who is wrong about their Catholic faith, but upon hearing the truth would change their minds. These people he imagines are a group who seek truth with zeal but have simply never been told the truth. This group does not exist.
No one needs the big picture because only two groups exist. Those who know and agree with the big picture already, and those who do not care. Useful discussion topics are either the particulars (as Matt is interested in) and efforts to try and get people to care at all.
