⚔️ St. Michael's Lent: A 40-Day Program for Men
This is a program built on three ancient pillars —
Prayer, Fasting, and Fraternity —
the same disciplines St. Francis of Assisi carried up Mount La Verna in 1224. It is designed for men who want to enter this season with structure, brotherhood, and spiritual seriousness.
🏛️ THE FOUNDATION:
What This Season Is
Starting on August 15th and ending on the Feast of the Archangel Michael (September 29th), this 40-day spiritual exercise asks men to commit to living a more simplified lifestyle — void of the noise of the world, and instead more in tune with a conversation with the Lord.
"St. Michael is the guardian angel of God's people and stands as an excellent model for the life of faith — especially for Christian men." He is the warrior archangel who models exactly what manhood in Christ looks like: fierce in battle, humble before God, unwavering in mission.
🙏 PILLAR ONE: PRAYER
A man's prayer life during St. Michael's Lent should be daily, structured, and anchored to both Our Lady and the angels.
Daily Non-Negotiables:
-
Morning Prayer — Begin each day with the St. Michael Prayer before leaving home. Light a candle before an image of St. Michael and recite the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil."
-
The Rosary — St. Francis designated these 40 days as a time of fervent Marian devotion. This creates a spiritual journey from the Queen of Heaven to her celestial defenders. The daily Rosary is the backbone of that journey.
-
The Chaplet of St. Michael — A powerful devotional prayer honoring the nine choirs of angels, asking for their intercession in spiritual battle.
-
Scripture — Every day, read together a passage from Sacred Scripture and reflect on what it means in your vocation as a husband, father, son, and brother.
Weekly Additions:
-
Recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whether daily or perhaps several times a week, is a laudable practice.
-
Those wishing to maintain the Franciscan spirit of St. Michael's Lent may wish to incorporate one of the Franciscan Little Offices of the Passion into their prayer rule.
The Vigil (Advanced):
The marquee discipline for serious men is the 2AM Night Vigil on Friday mornings — rising in the darkness to pray, standing watch as a spiritual warrior. This is not for everyone, but for the man ready to be stretched, it is transformative.
✊ PILLAR TWO: FASTING & ASCETICISM
With respect to fasting, taking on additional sacrifices beyond those already recommended by the Church is laudable. However, lest one's zeal get the better of them, it is prudent to consult one's spiritual father so as not to be overwhelmed by additional spiritual commitments one is unprepared for.
Suggested Ascetical Practices (choose your level):
| Practice | Entry Level | Standard |Serious
| Food |
Skip one meal/week | Fast Wednesdays & Fridays | One full fast day/week |
| Screen Time | No social media after 8pm | No social media weekdays | Delete apps entirely |
| Entertainment | No streaming on weekdays | No streaming period | No screens except work |
| Alcohol | Cut in half | Abstain on fast days | Full abstinence |
| Sleep | Earlier bedtime | Earlier wake time | Weekly night vigil |
Choose a daily sacrifice, such as abstaining from a favorite food, limiting screen time, or waking up early for prayer. Like Lent, Sundays are excluded from fasting.
"St. Michael's Lent is a great time for guys to get themselves back in the spiritual groove, to really embrace the rigor that comes with it... It's not just an arbitrary rigor, it's one that St. Francis put himself through."
🤝 PILLAR THREE: FRATERNITY (Brotherhood)
This is the element most men's programs miss — and it's what separates authentic transformation from private resolution-making that fades by week two.
Over the 40 days, meet in person weekly with a fraternity of 4–6 men. This is the model. Small, committed, accountable.
It's in the silence of prayer and with the necessary support of other men in the bonds of brotherhood that freedom in Christ is found.
"That fraternal aspect really comes to life when you're doing challenging things with each other — and certainly centering it around Christ."
How to Structure Brotherhood Meetings (Weekly):
1. Open in prayer — St. Michael Prayer together
2. Scripture reflection — Read and discuss the week's passage
3. Accountability — Each man answers: What discipline did I keep? Where did I fail? What grace did I receive?
4. Practical challenge — Set one concrete spiritual goal for the coming week
5. Close with the Rosary
⛪ PILLAR FOUR: THE SACRAMENTS
Making a renewed effort to go to Confession and, where possible, attend daily Mass are integral parts of having a spiritually beneficial St. Michael's Lent.
Minimum Sacramental Goal:
- Confession — At least twice during the 40 days (Week 1 and Week 5)
- Mass — Sunday Mass as a non-negotiable; daily Mass as an aspirational goal
- Eucharistic Adoration — One hour per week, ideally in silence
📖 PILLAR FIVE: FORMATION
This St. Michael's Lent, ask God to reveal the sin, fear, habit, or wound that is holding you back from complete transformation in Him. That's the interior work — and it needs fuel.

📱 A STRUCTURED PROGRAM FOR MEN: EXODUS 90
For men who want a fully built-out guided program, Fr. Columba Jordan, CFR, leads the Exodus 90 Brotherhood for the St. Michael's Lent Challenge, running from August 12th through the Feast of the Archangels on September 29th.
Every month, Exodus offers new challenges with intentional selections from the Bible, reflections crafted for modern men, and a plan of life designed to help grow in faith year-round. Every day of the year, participants read together a passage from Sacred Scripture and reflect on what it means in their vocations as husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers. The daily reflections support the beginning of silent prayer time each day.
Over 250,000 men have embarked on this life-changing journey. The Exodus 90 app is available at exodus90.com with a free 14-day trial.

The stakes of this season are not small. St. Francis received the stigmata — the very wounds of Christ impressed in his flesh — during these 40 days. The question worth sitting with is this:
What wound, habit, or compromise is standing between you and the man God made you to be — and are you willing to let St. Michael help you go to war against it for the next 40 days?
