⚔️ St. Michael's Lent: A 40-Day Program for Women
St. Michael's Lent belongs to the whole Church — not just to men, not just to Franciscans. Women are called to spiritual warfare just as surely as men are, and the model for this season is not only St. Michael the warrior, but Our Lady — who stands clothed with the sun, the moon beneath her feet, crowned with twelve stars, standing against the dragon (Rev. 12:1). She is the queen of every battle. This program is built for women who want to enter these 40 days with intention, depth, and sisterhood.
🏛️ THE FOUNDATION: What This Season Is
St. Michael's Lent is a 40-day period of prayer and penance that begins on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15) and ends on the Feast of the Holy Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael (September 29). This time of devotion is an opportunity for the faithful to renew their faith and grow in union with God.
For women, this season carries a uniquely beautiful spiritual logic: it opens on the greatest Marian feast of the liturgical year — the day Our Lady was taken body and soul into heaven — and closes on the feast of the Archangel who fought the ancient enemy at her side. The whole season is framed by the Woman and the Warrior.
🌹 PILLAR ONE: PRAYER
A woman's prayer life during St. Michael's Lent should be daily, structured, and anchored in both Our Lady and the angels.
Daily Non-Negotiables:
-
Morning Prayer — Begin each day with the St. Michael Prayer. Light a candle before an image of St. Michael and recite the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil."
-
The Rosary — St. Francis designated this season as a time of fervent devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The daily Rosary is the heartbeat of St. Michael's Lent for women. It is not incidental — it is central.
-
The Chaplet of St. Michael — A powerful devotional prayer honoring the nine choirs of angels, asking for their intercession and protection in spiritual battle.
-
Scripture — Reading and meditating over Scripture each day is a practice that enhances the St. Michael's Lent experience. The Book of Revelation offers insight on the eternal battle between good and evil and gives the faithful reassurance of God's love and Christ's second coming.
Weekly Additions:
- Recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whether daily or perhaps several times a week, is a laudable practice.
- During St. Michael's Lent, the faithful can deepen their prayer by adding a holy hour or an extra devotional, as well as fast and abstain from meat, just like they would during Lent leading up to Easter.
✊ PILLAR TWO: FASTING & ASCETICISM
St. Michael's Lent is a flexible devotion, allowing each person to tailor it to their spiritual capacity. While less rigorous than the Lenten season before Easter, it emphasizes prayer, fasting, and penance.
With respect to fasting, taking on additional sacrifices beyond those already recommended by the Church is laudable. As always, women who are pregnant, nursing, or managing health conditions should adapt these disciplines prudently and consult a spiritual director or confessor.
Suggested Ascetical Practices (choose your level):
| Practice | Entry Level | Standard | Serious |
| Food | Skip dessert daily | Fast Wednesdays & Fridays | One full fast day/week |
| Screen Time | No social media after 8pm | No social media on weekdays | Delete apps entirely |
| Entertainment | No streaming on weekdays | Limit to one show/week | No streaming period |
| Phone | No scrolling before prayer | Phone away until noon | Phone only for necessary calls |
| Sleep | Earlier bedtime | Earlier wake time for prayer | Weekly night vigil |
Choose a daily sacrifice, such as abstaining from a favorite food, limiting screen time, or waking up early for prayer. Like Lent, Sundays are excluded from fasting
🤝 PILLAR THREE: SISTERHOOD
The men's program has fraternity. Women need this equally — perhaps even more urgently. The isolation of modern life is itself a spiritual wound. This season is meant to be shared.
Form a sisterhood of 4–6 women — friends, parish members, coworkers in faith. Meet weekly, in person when possible. This is not a book club. It is a spiritual covenant for 40 days.
How to Structure Sisterhood Meetings (Weekly):
1. Open in prayer — St. Michael Prayer and one decade of the Rosary together
2. Scripture reflection — Read and discuss the week's passage (see 40-day map below)
3. Accountability — Each woman answers: What discipline did I keep? Where did I struggle? What grace did I notice?
4. Practical challenge — Set one concrete spiritual goal for the coming week
5. Close with the Rosary — all five decades or one Mysteries set per week
⛪ PILLAR FOUR: THE SACRAMENTS
Making a renewed effort to go to Confession and, where possible, attend daily Mass are integral parts of having a spiritually beneficial St. Michael's Lent.
Minimum Sacramental Goal:
-
Confession — At least twice during the 40 days (Week 1 and Week 5)
-
Mass — Sunday Mass as non-negotiable; daily Mass as an aspirational goal
-
Eucharistic Adoration — One holy hour per week in silence. Women who are mothers may bring their children — teaching them to sit in silence before the Lord is itself an act of spiritual warfare against a distracted world.
📖 PILLAR FIVE: FORMATION
This season is a perfect time to ask God to reveal the fear, wound, habit, or lie that has been quietly holding you back from becoming the woman — the daughter, wife, mother, sister, friend — He made you to be.
Recommended Reading (40 Days):
-
The Spiritual Combat — Lorenzo Scupoli (foundational text on interior warfare; carried by St. Francis de Sales)
-
True Devotion to Mary — St. Louis de Montfort (especially fitting for a season bookended by two great Marian/angelic feasts)
-
Story of a Soul — St. Thérèse of Lisieux (a warrior in the guise of a little flower — perfect for these 40 days)
-
Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence — Fr. Jean Baptiste Saint-Jure
-
Scripture: Revelation 12 (the Woman and the Dragon), Daniel 1–6 (standing firm in hostile territory), Judith (a woman of prayer who defeated an enemy no man could)

📿 SPECIAL DEVOTION: CONSECRATION TO ST. MICHAEL
Consider closing the 40 days on September 29th — the Feast of the Archangels — with a personal consecration or re-consecration, placing yourself and your household under the protection of St. Michael. This can be done after Mass, before an image of Our Lady and St. Michael, with your sisters gathered around you. It all culminates in consecrating or re-consecrating ourselves to Jesus through the patronage of St. Michael the Archangel.
🌺 A WORD FOR MOTHERS
Mothers are already living a kind of hidden martyrdom — a daily dying to self in the service of souls. St. Michael's Lent does not ask mothers to add burdens they cannot carry. It asks them to name what they are already doing as spiritual warfare and offer it deliberately to God.
Every diaper changed in patience, every meal made in love, every night of lost sleep offered to Our Lady — these are weapons. This season invites mothers to see their vocation as it truly is: not a distraction from holiness but the very path to it.
The Woman of Revelation 12 is not a passive figure. She is crowned, she is in labor, she is hunted — and she is protected by the very archangel whose feast closes this season. She is the model for every Catholic woman who dares to enter these 40 days with courage.
What fear, wound, or lie has the enemy whispered to you about who you are — and are you willing to let Our Lady and St. Michael help you go to war against it for the next 40 days?
