I totally get where people are coming from when they say, "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit"—Saint Paul said it himself, and I agree completely. As Christians, we’re called to honor God with our bodies, and that means being mindful of how we treat them. However, when people argue that smoking a cigar is automatically sinful because it might cause health issues, I think we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
The Risk Argument: Is It Consistent?
It seems like what this argument amounts to is that we shouldn’t engage in any activity that carries potential health risks. But if we’re going to follow that logic consistently, should we also rethink driving? There’s always some level of risk on the road, even though it’s something we all accept and manage as part of daily life.
Or take drinking alcohol in moderation. It has its health risks too, yet Scripture doesn’t condemn it. In fact, Jesus Himself provided wine for a wedding celebration! The key here, like in many areas of life, is moderation and responsibility.
Everyday Risks We Accept
Then, consider other everyday activities that come with health risks. We eat desserts, fried food, indulge in caffeine, spend hours sitting at a desk, or even take hot showers. Each of these activities carries some level of risk, but no one claims they’re inherently sinful.
