I've been thinking a lot lately about narrative and how we interperet the events of our lives. I just finished the book of Genesis. Joshua was sold into slavery by his brothers. How did he interpert that? "you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."
So ... I've put together seven examples of negative self-talk along with seven scipture verses which refute those things. ... we'll talk more about it tomorrow on Morning Coffee:
"I am not good enough."
- Scripture: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." - Psalm 139:14
"I can't do anything right."
- Scripture: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
"No one loves me."
- Scripture: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39
"I am worthless."
- Scripture: "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." - Luke 12:6-7
"I am a failure."
- Scripture: "The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down." - Psalm 145:14
"Things will never get better."
- Scripture: "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" - Jeremiah 29:11
"I am alone."
- Scripture: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." - Deuteronomy 31:6
Your turn ... what is a lie you believe or tell yourself which Scripture refutes.
