Morning Coffee: 10 Quotes on the Holy Rosary from St. Josemaria Escriva

We'll look at 10 Quotes on the Holy Rosary from St. Josemaria Escriva ...

“The Rosary is said not with the lips alone, muttering Hail Marys one after the other. That is the way over-pious old men and women rattle them off. —For a Christian, vocal prayer must spring from the heart, so that while the Rosary is said, the mind can enter into contemplation of each one of the mysteries.” (Furrow, no. 477)

“Take the Holy Rosary, one of the most deeply rooted of Christian devotions. The Church encourages us to contemplate its mysteries. She wants to engrave upon our heart and our imagination, together with Mary’s joy and sorrow and glory, the spellbinding example of Our Lord’s life, in his thirty years of obscurity, his three years of preaching, his ignominious Passion and his glorious Resurrection. To follow Christ — that is the secret.” (Friends of God, no. 299)

“Develop a lively devotion for Our Mother. She knows how to respond in a most sensitive way to the presents we give her. What is more, if you say the Holy Rosary every day, with a spirit of faith and love, Our Lady will make sure she leads you very far along her Son’s path.” (Furrow, no. 691)

“You always leave the Rosary for later, and you end up not saying it at all because you are sleepy. —If there is no other time, say it in the street without letting anybody notice it. It will, moreover, help you to have presence of God.” (Furrow, no. 478)

“‘Immaculate Virgin, I know well that I am only a miserable wretch, and all I do is increase each day the number of my sins…’ You told me the other day that was how you spoke to Our Mother. And I was confident in advising you with assurance to say the Holy Rosary. Blessed be that monotony of Hail Marys which purifies the monotony of your sins!” (Furrow, no. 475)

“The Rosary is most effective for those who use their intelligence and their study as a weapon. Because that apparently monotonous way of beseeching Our Lady as children do their Mother, can destroy every seed of vainglory and pride.” (Furrow, no. 474)

“The Holy Rosary: the joys, the sorrows, and the glories of the life of Our Lady weave a crown of praises, repeated ceaselessly by the Angels and the Saints in Heaven — and by those who love our Mother here on earth. —Practice this holy devotion every day, and spread it.” (The Forge, no. 621)

“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you will be amazed at the results.” (The Way, no. 558)

“Become little. Our Lord hides Himself from the proud and reveals the treasures of His grace to the humble. Never fear if, when thinking on your own, daring and childish words and affections escape from you. Jesus wants this. Mary encourages you. If you say the Rosary in this way, you will learn to pray well.” (Holy Rosary, no. 23)

“A sad way of not praying the Rosary is to leave it for the end of the day. If you say it when going to bed, it will be done at best badly and with no meditation on the mysteries. It will be difficult then to avoid routine, which is what drowns true piety, the only piety worth the name.” (Furrow, no. 476)

Day 5 of Advent

THE ERROR OF ARIUS ABOUT THE INCARNATION

In their eagerness to proclaim the unity of God and man in Christ, some heretics went to the opposite extreme and taught that not only was there one person, but also a single nature, in God and man. This error took its rise from Arius. To defend his position that those scriptural passages where Christ is represented as being inferior to the Father, must refer to the Son of God Himself, regarded in His assuming nature, Arius taught that in Christ there is no other soul than the Word of God who, he maintained, took the place of the soul in Christ’s body. Thus when Christ says, in John 14:28, “The Father is greater than I,” or when He is introduced as praying or as being sad, such matters are to be referred to the very nature of the Son of God. If this were so, the union of God’s Son with man would be effected not only in the person, but also in the nature. For, as we know, the unity of human nature arises from the union of soul and body.

Day 1 of Advent

RESTORATION OF MAN BY GOD THROUGH THE INCARNATION

We indicated above that the reparation of human nature could not be effected either by Adam or by any other purely human being. For no individual man ever occupied a position of pre-eminence over the whole of nature; nor can any mere man be the cause of grace. The same reasoning shows that not even an angel could be the author of man’s restoration. An angel cannot be the cause of grace, just as he cannot be man’s recompense with regard to the ultimate perfection of beatitude, to which man was to be recalled. In this matter of beatitude angels and men are on a footing of equality. Nothing remains, therefore, but that such restoration could be effected by God alone.

But if God had decided to restore man solely by an act of His will and power, the order of divine justice would not have been observed. justice demands satisfaction for sin. But God cannot render satisfaction, just as He cannot merit. Such a service pertains to one who ...

Day 1 of Advent

“I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified." — 1 Corinthians 9:27

Paul is writing to Christians in Corinth — a city soaked in pleasure and distraction. He uses the image of a Greek athlete training for competition — except the prize Paul is chasing is eternal, not temporary.
Three things he is saying in plain terms:
"I drive my body" — The Greek word is a boxing term. Literal meaning: strike under the eye. Paul is in a fight with his own flesh and he hits back.
"Train it" — The Greek means to lead as a slave. The body serves the soul. Not the other way around.
"Disqualified" — Even Paul — the greatest missionary in history — feared becoming spiritually useless through lack of discipline.

✝️ The Application Is Simple
The body wants the scroll. The soul wants God. Discipline decides which one wins.
That is the whole verse. That is the whole fast.

"There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle." — CCC 2015

Thanks Mark for coming to visit me on my book tour!

Anti-Magic: On Mercy, Manipulation, and Letting God Be God

I’ve been wrestling with a question about Divine Mercy lately. Or maybe less about Divine Mercy and more about what I’m actually doing when I pray.

At what point does devotion become superstition? When does confidence in the promises of a private revelation become something closer to treating God like a vending machine? Put in the right prayers, get the right graces.

How do I keep from becoming too “devotionist”? Especially for someone like me, whose prayer life is so tangled up in chaplets, icons, novenas, and all the other beautiful clutter of Catholic life.

Am I praying because I love God, or because I’m afraid of what might happen if I don’t?

That’s an ugly question to ask yourself. Uglier still when you suspect you already know the answer.

I do treat prayer like magic. We all do at our worst: in a panicked grasp at control, in fear, in selfish tantrum. But then we don’t. We persist in the habit, and He persists in persisting with ...

Since Joining The Daily Wire...

Since joining The Daily Wire, we’ve started streaming the show on Spotify, and somehow we’re now in the top 7 under Religion & Spirituality.

Take that, other religions and spiritualities!

Seriously though, thank you to everyone who watches here on Locals, Youtube, or Spotify.

Christ is King. Glorify Him.

PS: I know the Internet keeps saying that the Daily Wire is a sinking ship but I disagree :) But even if PWA will sink, it will sink proclaiming the goodness of God and Holy Mother Church.

Thanks for helping me do that.

It's finally here! Jesus Our Refuge 🙌

It’s finally here!

I’ve been pouring my heart into what I truly believe is an important book—Jesus Our Refuge (get here). It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever written, and my hope is that it helps you find peace and refuge in the heart of Jesus.

Please consider getting a copy here and reviewing!

P.S. I don’t earn anything from this book. When I wrote it, I knew it had to reach far and wide, so I partnered with a publisher who believes in that mission. Every bit of the royalties I’d have received goes into a fund to give away one million copies for free.
