I've begun reading The Catechism of the Council of Trent. Right in the beginning it says that "Faith Excludes Doubt" and "Faith Excludes Curiosity." This is one of those things where I would say "yes and no," and I wonder if this has to do with my modern evangelical influence that would say, "it's ok to doubt the faith. We all do." And, "It's ok to be curious and to want to understand the whys and hows of the faith." The modern evangelical/post-evangelical deconstructionists would also likely say that the statements in this Catechism are "culty" in that they discourage reasoning and free-thinking. Some might call it "blind faith." I won't go that far. I read nothing that says we're required to have blind faith, but rather fullness of faith, assurance of faith.

When I was coming into the Catholic Church I understand that I wasn't just moving from one church to another, one denomination to another like one chooses what outfit to wear or flavor ice cream to have that day. I knew I was making vows before God Himself, professing the faith of Holy Mother Church and the beliefs laid out by Holy Mother Church through Scripture and Tradition. I gave my will and faith over to God through His Church.

I suppose this is what the Council of Trent meant. Within the boundaries of my professed faith I have room to consider the faith, but doubts are over. Peeking around the corner to see what the pagans are up to or what the Lutherans hold as their worldview these days and how I can weasel it into my faith is the curiosity that's over. I am to have no doubts about Holy Mother Church nor am I to be curious about dabbling in worldviews outside of our Faith. Everything is wrapped in Catholicism. Everything is measured and weighed against my faith. Everything belongs to and pertains to God through His Church.

THE ERROR OF ARIUS ABOUT THE INCARNATION

In their eagerness to proclaim the unity of God and man in Christ, some heretics went to the opposite extreme and taught that not only was there one person, but also a single nature, in God and man. This error took its rise from Arius. To defend his position that those scriptural passages where Christ is represented as being inferior to the Father, must refer to the Son of God Himself, regarded in His assuming nature, Arius taught that in Christ there is no other soul than the Word of God who, he maintained, took the place of the soul in Christ’s body. Thus when Christ says, in John 14:28, “The Father is greater than I,” or when He is introduced as praying or as being sad, such matters are to be referred to the very nature of the Son of God. If this were so, the union of God’s Son with man would be effected not only in the person, but also in the nature. For, as we know, the unity of human nature arises from the union of soul and body.

RESTORATION OF MAN BY GOD THROUGH THE INCARNATION

We indicated above that the reparation of human nature could not be effected either by Adam or by any other purely human being. For no individual man ever occupied a position of pre-eminence over the whole of nature; nor can any mere man be the cause of grace. The same reasoning shows that not even an angel could be the author of man’s restoration. An angel cannot be the cause of grace, just as he cannot be man’s recompense with regard to the ultimate perfection of beatitude, to which man was to be recalled. In this matter of beatitude angels and men are on a footing of equality. Nothing remains, therefore, but that such restoration could be effected by God alone.

A little bit of St Michael’s Lent. I did it last year and I am going to do it again this year.

Brothers, welcome to Exodus 90.
St. Michael’s Lent begins in one week. We are using this time to prepare to enter into this holy season, focused on imitating the fidelity of St. Michael and St. Francis’s devotion to him. Our theme this year is “Stand Firm,” drawing upon the Prophet Daniel’s fidelity in exile. In this final week of preparation, we are reflecting upon standing firm in passages throughout the Bible.
