A man in a local parish received an emergency heart transplant.
From what I understand, the lines between life and death are blurred when it comes to organ harvesting, and there have been cases of people being declared dead, prepped for harvest, but are actually alive. Also, apparently, sometimes a person is kept on some form.of life support to keep the organs useable. The medical community says dead, but are they really?
Of all the organs harvested the heart is most in need of being "kept alive" in order to be harvested. At least that is what I have heard.
Considering we are Catholics who believe in natural death, how can we accept a heart transplant if it is true that a human still has to be technically alive in order for it to be harvested?
Granted, I also heard pig hearts work in humans, so maybe be got a piggy heart? I don't know.
I'm no expert, but after hearing multiple stories, including from the medical community that sometimes known organ donors are not given life-saving care, but actually allowed to die in order to harvest their organs, even if they do not have a DNR, I have taken myself off of the donor registry.
It is a beautiful thing to help others live, but I also want to be intact when I die and I certainly don't want to be killed for my organs or still be alive when they harvest them.
What are your thoughts? Do you have better knowledge in this matter?
