My family and I started attending a small parish a few months ago. For being incredibly small, it has a reverent NO liturgy.
The superior spoke to the parish last week about how the priests were considering experimenting with ad orientem. He explained how he and the other clergy were never exposed to this growing up (as older millennials), but they felt called to try.
If it went well, maybe they'd do it every other Sunday, or something of the like. The superior made clear that it would NOT become the norm, but rather a way to refocus for the foreseeable future.
The superior listed off reasons, such as to focus on Jesus and NOT their narcissistic tendencies to impress a crowd. Concerned, he added how the spirits of pride and narcissism run rampant in the priesthood.
He discussed how priests are leaving their vocation at a rapid rate, and he believed much was due to a lost emphasis on the Sacrifice of the Mass.
Equally important, he explained how priests are held to a higher standard in Judgment for how they led their flock (either to or away from Jesus).
The entire speech came from the heart; it was evident. He showed sincere concern for our souls, as well as his own.
Lastly, he added that it was possible that the bishop could forbid them from doing ad orientem, but that he (the priest) felt it was important for him as the superior to talk to his parish about this.
Immediately after Mass, swarms of people came forward in hostility (all exclusively of the older generations), emotionally expressing their preference to keep things "facing me."
It got heated.
A few days ago, we sent a private message expressing our support.
However, the hostility happened again this weekend.
I'm honestly worried.
Please pray for these priests and this parish.
